With the second day of finals in Cottbus the 2016 edition of Turnier der Meister has come to an end! Just like yesterday, five gold medals were up for grabs in the Lausitz Arena. The men competed on vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar, while the women showed their best routines on balance beam and floor exercise.
On balance beam it was Poland’s Katarzyna Jurkowska-Kowalska who grabbed the gold with a score of 14,033 points. Sophie Scheder from Germany followed closely with 13,900 points. Sanne Wevers, the vice world champion on this apparatus, finished in third place. Wevers qualified in first place for Sunday’s beam final, but couldn’t retain the top spot in the final. The Dutch gymnast, who started her routine with a difficult backhandspring with full turn mount, fell with her triple turn. Despite the fall, she still secured the bronze medal.

Lisa Top from the Netherlands, who qualified first for the floor final, secured the top spot in the finals on Sunday. Top performed a good routine including a double piked Arabian and a handspring double front to score 13,600 points. She finished ahead of Katarzyna Jurkowska Kowalska from Poland (13,533) and Sophie Scheder from Germany (13,333).

Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev, who competed in all six event finals in Cottbus, secured his first gold medal of the 2016 Turnier der Meister edition by winning the gold on vault. Verniaiev stuck both his vaults, including a almost perfect Dragulescu vault (handspring double front with half turn) to score 15,233 points. The Ukrainian finished well ahead of Ruiyang Qu from China (14,899) and Benjamin Gischard from Switzerland (14,833).

Verniaiev, the 2015 European champion on parallel bars, was not able to add another gold medal to his medal tally on parallel bars. The Ukrainian performed a routine with some mistakes and only finished fifth.

The gold went to German gymnast Marcel Nguyen, who scored 15,666 points for his solid routine. Nguyen finished his routine with a perfect Tsukahara dismount. Nguyen was followed by Christian Baumann from Switzerland (15,500) and Germany’s Lukas Dauser (15,366).

During the high bar final in Cottbus we unfortunately saw a lot of mistakes and falls, but also some very spectacular flight elements and stuck dismounts! Oleg Verniaiev from Ukraine made sure to win his second gold medal of the day as he performed a flawless routine to score 14,966 points.

Pablo Braegger from Switzerland, who won the high bar title in 2015, performed a good routine including a nice Cassina and Kolman. Braegger only had some problems with his double double layout dismount and scored 14,766 to win the silver.

The bronze went to Braeggers’ teammate Christian Baumann who won his second medal of the day with a score of 14,766 points.
